What is Nous, and how is it different from other reading trackers?
Nous is a book tracker for people who want to actually remember and understand what they read. Most trackers are about logging what you've finished and finding the next book. Nous is built around the reading itself: you begin each session by recalling what came before, capture notes and highlights as you go, and close with a short reflection that helps it stick. Alongside that, you may add books to your library and organise them by status and tags, and see progress unfold over time as you grow as a reader.
How does Nous work?
When you sit down to read, you start a session. It opens with a prompt to recall what you remember from your last session. During the session, you can capture thoughts and notes as they come, by typing or by voice. When you finish, you close with a brief reflection and capture any highlights. Over time, your sessions become a record of not just what you read, but what you understand from what you read.
Can I import my existing books, and export my notes?
Yes. You can import your library from Goodreads and StoryGraph, so you don't have to start from scratch. And everything you capture in Nous is yours to take with you — you can export your notes and highlights as Markdown for Obsidian and other tools. As Nous develops, more integrations will be made available.
Where is my reading data stored, and is it private?
Your library, notes, and highlights are stored on your device, and securely in your own iCloud if you have it enabled. We can't see your reading data — it never leaves your device unless you choose to export it. You can read the full details in our Privacy Policy.
Is Nous free?
Nous is free to download and start using, with the ability to add unlimited books, reading sessions, highlights, and much more. You will not get gated out of tracking your books with regular use. For those who want a bit more, and wish to support ongoing development of Nous, you can choose to subscribe. This grants bonus features, such as unlimited enhanced dictations, unlimited session recalls, monthly and yearly stats, DNF and Next statuses, and more.
