Privacy Policy

Nous (“we”, “us”, “our”, or “the app”) are committed to ensuring your privacy. As such, your data and personal information will never be sold. This privacy policy explains how your information is used.

Information we collect

Your reading data. All data within Nous, including your reading library, notes, and highlights, are all stored locally. We don't have access to it, and it doesn't leave your device unless you choose to export it. In future, iCloud uploading will be available as an option, in which case your data will be stored on Apple's secure servers.

Usage data. We collect anonymous data about how the app is used. We use this data to understand what's working and to prioritise what to improve. If you'd prefer not to share usage data, you can opt out at any time in your iOS Settings under Privacy & Analytics.

Book searches. When you search for a book, the query is sent to servers which return information about the book, including descriptions and covers.

Apple platform data. Apple collects standard usage and diagnostic information, subject to their own privacy policy. If you've opted in to sharing analytics with developers in your iOS settings, we may receive anonymised, aggregated data about app performance.

How we use your information

We use the data we collect to provide the service and to make Nous better. We don't use your data for advertising, and we don't share it with third parties for their own purposes.

Third-party services

Nous uses third-party platforms to provide the core user experience and to enhance the app. Book search data is supplied by Google Books and Internet Archive.

To enhance voice dictation, we use a third-party AI. Your raw dictation text is sent securely via Cloudflare, queries the AI server, and then returns polished text. Your voice itself is never sent or used in any way.

Data storage and security

Your reading data lives on your device and is protected by iOS's built-in security. If you have iCloud or local backups enabled, your device may include app data in those backups. This is controlled through your iOS settings.

Deleting your data

You can delete any reading session, book, or note directly within the app. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data from your device. If you have questions about data that may have been collected through our analytics, reach out and we'll help.

Children's privacy

Nous is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. If we make significant changes, we'll update the effective date at the top. Continued use of the app after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
